BackPack Pals Program
76.9% of Montgomery County Students are on the free or reduced cost lunch program, meaning that thousands rely almost exclusively on the meals they receive at school Monday thru Friday for nourishment.
The Backpack Pals Program is sponsored by Communities In Schools of Montgomery County along with support from Montgomery County Churches in Action and Montgomery County Schools.
The Backpack Pals program is designed to meet the needs of children facing food insecurity.
Letters are sent home to the parents/guardians of identified students to obtain permission for the child to participate.
Bags filled with food are sent home on Fridays, these bags are packed and brought to the schools by volunteers in the community.
Backpack Pals programs in other areas have shown to have a positive impact on a student’s behavior, attendance and academic achievement, as well as alleviating hunger which aligns this program's initiatives with the CISMC mission.
