MINUTES

 

May 4, 2009

 

 

            The Montgomery County Board of Education convened in regular monthly meeting on Monday, May 4, 2009, at 6:30 p.m. with board members present as follows:

 

                        Steven W. DeBerry, Chair

                        James M. Spivey, Vice Chair

                        Almetta Armstrong

                        Tommy A. Blake

                        Ann S. Long

                        Frances H. Reaves

                        Shirley M. Threadgill

 

            Chairman DeBerry called the meeting to order and called for a motion to adopt the meeting agenda.  Upon a motion by Mr. Spivey, and a second by Mrs. Long, the agenda was adopted with unanimous approval from the board.

 

            The opening devotional thoughts by Chairman DeBerry were concerning a little drop of water.  Faith gives us little drops of water to carry on the work of God.

 

            The Pledge of Allegiance to the Flag of the United States of America was led by Mt. Gilead Elementary students, Jordyn Inman and Kacy Haithcock. 

    

            With no one requesting to address the board, the public comment period was not held.

 

            Everyone present stood for a moment of silence when Chairman DeBerry presented the following Resolution of Esteem for former Educational Personnel:

 

Martha Sue Robinson Walker

 

            WHEREAS, our Heavenly Father, in His infinite love and wisdom, saw fit to call home Martha Sue Robinson Walker on April 15, 2009, and

 

            WHEREAS, her services as an elementary school teacher to the Educational System of Montgomery County were a living testimonial of her integrity and skill, and

 

            WHEREAS, her loss will be deeply felt, not only by those with whom she served, but also throughout her entire community and county.

 

            NOW, THEREFORE, be it resolved that the Montgomery County Board of Education goes on record in expressing a sense of real loss and regret in her passing; that a copy of this resolution be conveyed to her family as an indication of our deep sympathy; and that a copy of the same be filed as a part of the permanent minutes of the board of education.

With a motion from Mrs. Long, and a second from Mrs. Armstrong, the board unanimously approved the consent agenda as follows:

 

  • Board minutes of the regular meeting and budget work session held on April 6, 2009.
  • Personnel and Auxiliary Reports as follows:

 

1)      approval of the following administrative contracts:

            The summer work schedule was also approved which includes four ten-hour days, 7:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m., Monday through Thursday with a 30-minute lunch break beginning the week of Monday, June 15 and ending Friday, August 14, 2009.

 

            Dr. Ginny Carpenter reminded the board about the monthly Closing the Gap/Dropout Prevention meetings.  Our schools are also doing their own programs, including checking on absenteeism with personal follow-up.  They are tutoring after school, and doing aerobics at their schools.  Innovative things in place are, Young Men on the Rise at the high school level and at Montgomery Learning Academy, the Regal Eagles at WMHS, match competency tutorials, goal setting quarterly, and graduation awareness week.  There are student assistance teams at the schools using teacher cadets.  There are reading rotations, music programs, and a running program to help form relationship outside of academics.

 

Dr. Ginny Carpenter introduced Charles Del Forge, Principal at Mt. Gilead Elementary School.  Mt. Gilead has a school sponsor mentor program for at promise students reaching children in the lower grades.  Every child has a personalized education plan.  The results will show at the end of grade testing.  Students went to a conference and were encouraged to enter a GAP oracle contest.  Each student wrote from their own perspective what they thought would help close the gap and further education for all students.  These were shared with the board.

 

Dr. Peters proclaimed May 5, 2009 as National Teacher Day.  With a motion from Mrs. Long, and a second from Mrs. Reaves, the board was in unanimous agreement.

 

Mr. Larry Jenkins introduced Regina Smith of First Health, who gave an update for this year.  Well child checkups, acute illness visits, sports physicals, lab testing, nursing visits, immunizations, risk assessments were among the five thousand student interactions.  Healthy eating and active play were focuses this year.  A goal for next year in addition to healthy eating and active play, is to get electronic filing for health records.

 

Kathy Johnson gave the proposed 2009-2010 local budget.  With a motion from Mr. Spivey and a second from Mr. Blake, the board voted unanimously to accept budget.

 

Dr. Lancaster presented the following Policies and Regulations for approval, having waited the 30 day approval period.  Two Policies, #4135-Tuition for Discretionary Admissions and #4400-Attendance will not be voted on or changed at this time.  They were on the list of first reading from the April 6, 2009 board meeting.

Ms. Armstrong made a motion to convene to closed session, along with a second from Mrs. Reaves, with all in favor the meeting was convened to close session.

 

Chairman DeBerry reconvened the meeting after the closed session.
