School Closure FAQ for Staff

1. During this closure, which of the days are workdays?

All of the days are workdays. The schools are closed for the students, not for the adults. For that reason, all salaried employees are expected to work in some capacity or take leave.

2. How can we remain safe if we are expected to work?

The only days that we are requiring you to physically be present at work is Monday, March 16, a half-day on Tuesday, March 17, and all day on both March 26 and March 27. You may choose to work the other days at your designated worksite, work from home, or take leave. Please note that this flexibility is only extended during the initial 2-week closure. If the closure is extended, a decision on how to proceed with staff workdays will be re-evaluated.

3. How does the work from home options work?

If you choose to work from home, you will need to discuss it with your immediate supervisor. They will assign a specific work product that you will be responsible for while you are working from home. For teachers, that work product is teaching your class. For instance, if the principal receives numerous complaints that the teacher is non-responsive to email or calls, the principal will know the teacher is not working and will assign appropriate leave for the specified time period. For other positions, please check with your supervisor to find out what the work product will be for your specific position.

4. Can I just choose to work at my assigned school or department?

Yes. We will be flexible in allowing you to work from the area that you find most comfortable given the situation during this initial 2-week closure. You may also choose to take leave as well. If the closure is extended, we will re-evaluate work schedules after this initial 2-week period.

5. I am not a salaried employee. What about me?

Those hourly employees who are not full-time and who usually do not work when students are out should not be working during this time either. We are looking at some alternatives to try to get you some work time to minimize the impact, but we cannot guarantee that time as of right now.

6. What about work for the students?

Even though the executive order for the closure has no specific requirements for student education, it is important to make sure we are trying to work with our students. Just as we are trying to be flexible with staff, staff will need to be flexible with students. K-5 students will be provided with work packets. Students in grades 6-12 have access to online materials that have already been developed by their teachers.

7. What about internet connectivity?

The internet at all schools has been opened up so that students can access the internet from school parking lots.

8. What about EC services?

We will receive a waiver and extension of deadlines for EC meetings, deadlines, and services.

9. Will our students be able to access meals and nutrition during this break?

Yes. We will operate a drive-thru lunch service at five community sites during this closure. We will provide a bag lunch at these five sites for five days a week for students. In addition, Communities in Schools will operate a supplemental nutrition program for two days each week for any community member (one bag per family) facing food insecurity.
